Crafting with Kids // Painted Trinket Box

As the weather gets chilly, I'm starting to turn my weekly adventures with Eli more indoors-- usually to bake or work on a fun craft project. This weekend, we headed to our local Michaels in search of some great ideas. Pinterest is amazing for project inspiration, but I tend to think when it comes to three year olds, basic is best.

I knew ahead of time that I'd love to get Eli to work on some special projects that he could gift to family members this holiday season, and stocked up on some acrylic paints in gorgeous colors (seriously, there's like 500 options in the paint aisle), plus lots of wooden goodies like trinket boxes and ornaments. I let him pick out some fun sponges and stampers, plus a new package of brushes and we had ourselves hours worth of crafts for less than $25!

I'm not the type to give much direction when it comes to artistic expression -- so I let him go to town mixing colors and generally making a mess. Pro tip-- invest in a giant baking sheet from your local kitchen supply store. They're roughly $15 and are perfect for a flat surface for everything from cookie making, to Montessori lessons, to art projects. We have three of them, and have them in rotation constantly!

E had a blast making this little box -- he used his stampers and sponges and a variety of brushes from our pack. He has a tendency to get a little prissy once he gets too much paint on his hands, but one little box kept him entertained him for nearly half an hour! All it takes is some great color and varying texture, and its an abstract little piece of usable art that I know his grandmothers and great aunt are going to love for storing earrings or spare keys -- I'm even planning to have him paint a stool for his little sisters room! Michael's even carries recipe boxes, frames and milk crates -- all of which would look amazing with the artistic tough of a preschooler on them.
all done
We're so excited to be partnering with our friends at Michael's, to give one lucky winner a $25 Gift Card, which is plenty to get everything to make this project! All you need to do to enter is leave a comment below with your favorite project or activity to do indoors with your little one during the colder months!

Winner will be randomly selected on November 20th at Noon EST. Due to the corporate nature of this giveaway, winner must reside in the US and be over the age of 18.

I love all the holiday kits Michaels has right now. We especially love anything we can use puffy paint on!

I love doing giant floor puzzels, and crafts with my son. We are going to be making presents for the grandmas too! I also love that he is getting old enough to play board games, so we’ve started playing as a family and on cold or rainy days. Candy land and my little pony chutes and ladders are a kid favorite in our house! :)

We are loving playdoh, stickers, new puzzles and chalk right now.
